What hardly anyone knows: a pirate crew usually chose its own captain, because a pirate ship and the crew were one, but the captain was replaceable. The latter, of course, had to be an alpha male and enjoy the trust of the crew. After an election, however, a captain could by no means be sure of his post (and life). He constantly had to assert his leadership position and win the trust of those who had not elected him.
