Description
"Pirate bureaucracy" by Martin Würzburger
Pirates were known for their almost modern welfare provision. There was compensation for severed body parts (but only at work!), provision for widows and orphans and a retirement pension.
What hardly anyone knows is that the bureaucracy was rampant. No wonder: a job as a pirate pension fund administrator was much more convenient than getting your money from unruly people on other people's ships. At some point, however, the relationship between productive and administrative pirates became so unfavorable that the doors of the pirate administration's headquarters in Nassau were simply trashed and the entire building burned down, including everything inside.
Taken at Grain des Pirates, Binic, France (I had to apply for a pirate photocopying license)
